My mother would consistently call me to complain about my father, who had left her a few months earlier. I would be in the middle of work and feel guilty about not answering her call, but sometimes I had to decline it because I just didn’t have the energy or time to take on her emotions on top of mine – I was also hurting about the divorce.

I finally had to tell her that I was sorry, but I could not be her sounding board anymore. It was unfair for her to talk about my father like that, especially when I was trying to maintain my relationship with him. She was upset and it was a tough conversation, but I was able to explain that I felt she was trying to pit him against me and that I preferred she speak with a professional.

It’s been years now, and the boundary remains in place. Only occasionally do I need to reassert it, and doing so is easier every time because the foundation for that discussion is already established.
